Virtual Workshop - 8:00 PM EDT

    Parliamentary Procedure by the Numbers

    Mark Desrosiers, DMD, CP, RP

This interactive 75-minute workshop will cover parliamentary procedure from the view of mathematics, including:

    • How many persons can preside at a meeting?
    • How many motions can be immediately pending at a time under RONR? Under AIPSC?
    • How many ways are there to close debate under RONR? Under AIPSC?
    • How many privileged motions are in AIPSC? In RONR?
    • How many incidental motions are in AIPSC? But how many are there if you include the "others"? What about RONR?
    • What is the number of steps in making a motion in RONR? In AIPSC?
    • What are the Specific Purpose Main motions in AIPSC (and how many are there)?
    • What is (or isn't) parliamentary procedure calculus? Or is it just algebra?

Questions and answers will be taken both during and at the end of the workshop.

This workshop is approved for 1.5 CEUs on behalf of the National Association of Parliamentarians for NAP credential renewal

    About the Speaker:

Mark Desrosiers is a past Speaker of the Connecticut State Dental Association, serves as the parliamentarian for the American Association of Endodontists, and serves as a town moderator for Columbia, Connecticut.  He is a founding member of the Dental Chapter of AIP and served as its first President.  His interest in parliamentary procedure is based on making meeting more effective.  To that end he enjoys learning about, and teaching others how run better meetings.

    AIP 2026 Presiding Practicum

    March 15 - April 28, 2026

    Online (Central Time)

Choose the Level and Time That Fits You

Members may register for any level and any scheduled session time that aligns with their goals. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced sessions are distinct experiences, each with its own expectations and learning outcomes.

    • Beginner sessions focus on foundational presiding skills using both Robert’s Rules of Order and the AIP Standard CodeChoose this level if you have limited presiding experience, you are not confident about the presiding experience you have, or if you want very precise instruction to help prepare for a credentialing exam. This level focuses on main and subsidiary motions, with a few privileged motions (recess and adjourn) also covered.

    • Intermediate sessions concentrate on presiding under the participant’s chosen authority, with progressively more complex procedural challenges. Point of Order, Appeal, Suspend the Rules, Reconsider, and Secondary Amendments are covered, along with other incidental motions make an appearance at this level.

    • Advanced sessions still concentrate on the participant’s chosen authority, with progressively more complex procedural and leadership challenges. Bring Backs (RONR) and Specific Purpose Main Motions (AIPSC) are in this level, which can sometimes focus on the theory of parliamentary procedure as much as the presiding.

    Who Should Attend

These practicums are ideal for those who:

    • Are new to presiding and want structured, low-pressure practice

    • Preside occasionally and want to build fluency and confidence

    • Are preparing for leadership roles, teaching, or professional work

    • Want targeted feedback rather than lecture-based training

    • Are preparing for a credentialing exam where presiding or script-writing skills will be tested

Congratulations! Your decision to seek certification is important.

To help you, AIP has compiled this package. It includes the following:

Certification requires more than achieving a passing score on the examination. It also requires obtaining 30 hours of activities in three categories within the parliamentary profession. All activities must be fully documented. For example, activity as an instructor will be documented with a printed program or other supporting material verifying the activity, dates, and content. If you pass the examination and have documented your 30 activity points to the satisfaction of the Accrediting Department, you will be officially notified of your certification.

The Accrediting Department determines whether the requirements for certification have been met. You may not use the “Certified Professional Parliamentarian” or “CPP” designations until you have been officially notified that the credential has been awarded.

Thank you again for your interest in parliamentary certification. If you need further assistance, contact the AIP Accrediting Department at accrediting@aipparl.org.
