AIP 2024 Spring Practicum (VIRTUAL)

**All of the educational sessions (not presiding breakouts) will be recorded and be made available for those that registered to attend.  Once all of the videos are edited and uploaded, attendees will have access for about sixty days.

The 2024 Spring Virtual Practicum will be virtual and will be three days in duration.  The topic will be The Standard Defaults. Participants will hear from the following instructors:

  • Thomas 'Burke' Balch, JD, on defaults in Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised, Twelfth Edition;
  • Kenneth Reed, CP-T, on defaults in the AIP Standard Code of Parliamentary Procedure, Second Edition;
  • Kay Crews, CPP-T, on defaults in Keesey and Cannons;
  • Michael Malamut, JD, CPP-T, on defaults in the Model Nonprofit Act; and
  • C.J. Cavin, JD, CPP-T, on professional responsibility.

The practicum will begin on Friday, May 31st promptly at 11:00 a.m. (EDT) Friday through Sunday, June 2nd when we will end around 4:15 p.m. (EDT).

ABOUT THE PRACTICUM:

The presiding sessions divided into three levels consisting of Basic, Intermediate and Advance. If you are wondering, at the basic level, the focus is on the fundamentals, with emphasis on language, cadence, and poise.  

The Basic Level practice scenarios will cover:

- Main Motion

- Single Subsidiary motions

- Amend (including the AMP method of stating amendments)

- Refer

- Postpone Definitely

- Previous Question/ Close Debate

- Recess

- Taking votes using Zoom "nonverbal feedback," unanimous consent, show

           of hands, by voice, rising.  

The Intermediate and Advance Levels will separate AIPSC from RONR authorities and add the precedence of motions, fluency in processing motions and that the proposed motion is in order.

In addition, the Intermediate Level builds on items already covered to include:

- Point of Order

- Appeal

- Suspend the Rules

- Reconsider

- Incidental motions

- Renewal of motions

- Secondary Amendment

- Filling blanks (AIPSC)

- Table (AIPSC)


The Advance Level practice will focus on greater fluency and presiding judgment. In addition to those things covered in the Basic and Intermediate level, specific motions may include:

- Object to the Consideration (RONR)

- "Stacked motions"

- Bring Back

- Filling blanks (RONR)

- Adopt in Lieu of (AIPSC)

- Table (RONR)

REGISTRATION:

To ensure an adequate number of facilitators for the presiding practices, the registration will be capped at 150 participants with any additional registrants placed on a provisional list.
